Course A (Gonçalves)*: Media Freedom and Journalism SafetyMedia freedom is declining worldwide, and different dimensions have been contributing to such decline. The Media Freedom Indexes measure the dimensions of journalists’ safety, legal framework, and political and economic contexts. Examples of aspects considered are violations suffered by journalists, the challenges of accessing information, occurrences of censorship, and the levels of media concentration and media independence from political institutions. In this seminar, we explore the theoretical foundations of Media Freedom to later specifically focus on journalism safety. We examine threats ranging from harassment and surveillance to imprisonment and impunity for violence.
